What do we witness when we see through the eyes of Black women?

Curated by Tina Knowles and Genel Ambrose, and in partnership with Black Women Photographers, WITNESS is an immersive visual arts experience and national tour that features work by Black women and non-binary artists who project their vision of the world, society, community, and themselves through art. Featuring installations, portraiture, and intimately captured moving and still images across mediums, WITNESS explores the intersectional vantage point of the Black femme-identifying artist—inviting the viewer to bear witness to what they may not otherwise see on their own.

WITNESS exhibition opened in March 2023 in Los Angeles at the WACO Theater (founded by Tina Knowles). In October 2023, at the invitation of Melinda French Gates’ Pivotal Ventures, WITNESS traveled to TEDWomen in Atlanta, Georgia. In December 2023, WITNESS was mounted in the historic neighborhood of Overtown, Miami in partnership with local non-profit Eden At Basel. WITNESS was featured at Photoville annual photography exhibition in New York City during Summer 2024.

It is an ambition of the curators to travel WITNESS globally to continue driving narrative change and collective healing for Black women and girls.
