What do we witness when we see through the eyes of Black women?

Curated by Tina Knowles and Genel Ambrose, and in partnership with Black Women Photographers, WITNESS is an immersive visual arts experience that features work by Black women and non-binary artists who project their vision of the world, society, community, and themselves through art. Featuring installations, portraiture, and intimately captured moving and still images across mediums, WITNESS explores the intersectional vantage point of the Black femme-identifying artist—inviting the viewer to bear witness to what they may not otherwise see on their own.

WITNESS exhibition opened in March 2023 in Los Angeles at the WACO Theater (founded by Richard Lawson and Tina Knowles). In October 2023, at the invitation of Melinda French Gates’ Pivotal Ventures, WITNESS traveled to TEDWomen in Atlanta, Georgia. In December 2023, WITNESS was mounted in the historic neighborhood of Overtown, Miami in partnership with local non-profit Eden At Basel.

It is an ambition of the curators to travel WITNESS globally in an effort to expand the narratives of Black women and girls.
